  • Octordle

Octordle is a Wordle spinoff game in which players must try to guess eight words at once.

    It is hosted by Britannica.

The rules are very much the same as for Wordle.

    Octordle Rules

    • The player has a certain number of guesses to determine the eight hidden words. The number of guesses depends on which Quordle game is being played.
    • After each guess, letters are highlighted in different colours on each of the eight grids:
      • Green: The letter is in the correct position.
      • Yellow: The letter is in the word but in the wrong position.
      • Grey: The letter is not in the word at all.
    • Words with duplicated letters are allowed.
    • Simple plurals are valid word guesses but will never be a solution.
    • If a player guesses a word containing just one letter which is repeated in the solution word, Octordle will not show that letter as being repeated.
    • However, if a player guesses a word with a repeated letter, but the solution word only has one of that letter, Octordle will highlight just one of the letters in the appropriate colour.

    Octordle Game Modes

Octordle has three daily games, all of which can be played for free. They are simply variants of each other and determine how many guesses are available. The solution words are different for each puzzle, so all can be played each day:

    1. Classic: The original daily Octordle with 13 guesses.
    2. Chill: Relax with 16 guesses and fewer unusual words.
    3. Extreme: Challenge yourself with only 12 guesses and more unusual words.

    Octordle Sequence Game

Sequence is similar to the original Octordle game with the following changes.

    1. Only one unsolved word is visible at a time. Once you solve a word, the next board is unlocked.
    2. 13 guesses are allowed.

    Octordle Rescue Game

The puzzle begins with starter words already in place. The other rules remain the same.

  • Weaver

Weaver is a daily word ladder game in which players must attempt to transform one four-letter word into another in the fewest turns possible, by simply,y changing one letter at a time to form a valid intermediate word.

    Weaver Rules

Players are presented with a grid of four columns and three rows. In the first row is a four letter word. This is the seed or start word. In the third row is the target or finishing four letter word. The middle row is blank, awaiting a first guess.

In each turn you must form a valid new word by changing only one letter from the word above. The goal is to reach the target word.

Each game has a ‘par’ score which is considered the minimum number of turns required to transform from the start to the end word. You can take more turns than this.

An example valid puzzle sequence from EAST to WEST could be EAST – VAST – VEST – WEST.

As well as the daily puzzle which is the same for everyone, there is an unlimited mode to play more than one puzzle in a day.

  • Connections

Connections is a word group matching game from the New York Times, with a daily puzzle which is free to play.

It shares similarities with the BBC’s long-running Only Connect connecting wall round.

    Connections Rules

    • Find groups of four items that share something in common.
      • Select four items and tap ‘Submit‘ to check if your guess is correct.
      • Find the groups without making 4 mistakes!
    • Each group is assigned a color, which will be revealed as you solve:
      • Yellow: Straightforward
      • Green
      • Blue
      • Purple: Tricky

    Connections Strategy

    • Example categories:
      • FISH: Bass, Flounder, Salmon, Trout
      • FIRE ___: Ant, Drill, Island, Opal
    • Categories will always be more specific than “5-LETTER-WORDS,” “NAMES” or “VERBS.”
    • Each puzzle has exactly one solution. Watch out for words that seem to belong to multiple categories!
    • As this is hosted by a North American company, a lot of words and categories may be more culturally relevant to a US audience, and hence seem more difficult to players from other countries.
    • There is no time limit (other than the day itself) to complete the puzzle.

    Quordle Game Modes

Quordle has three daily games, all of which can be played for free. They are simply variants of each other and determine how many guesses are available. The solution words are different for each puzzle, so all can be played each day:

    1. Classic: The original daily Quordle with 9 guesses.
    2. Chill: Relax with 12 guesses and fewer unusual words.
    3. Extreme: Challenge yourself with only 8 guesses and more unusual words.

    Quordle Sequence Game

Sequence is similar to the original Quordle game with the following changes.

    1. Only one unsolved word is visible at a time. Once you solve a word, the next board is unlocked.
    2. 10 guesses are allowed instead of the standard 9.

    Quordle Weekly Challenge

When one daily puzzle is solved during a given week, a separate weekly challenge puzzle is unlocked. This has the same rules as the standard game but tends to include more obscure words.

  • Squares

Squares is a Boggle-like clone in which players must form as many words as possible from the 4×4 grid of letters.

    Squares Rules

Create words by connecting letters up, down, left, right, and diagonally. The goal is to find all the words in the letter grid and score the maximum number of points.

    • You earn 1 point for each letter in a guessed word. For example, you will receive 5 points for a 5-letter word.
    • Words must contain at least 4 letters.
    • Each tile cannot be used more than one time in a word.
    • Words with hyphens, proper nouns, vulgarities, and especially rare words are not included in the main word list.
    • Obscure, archaic, and slang words are bonus words — they do not earn points but are counted in the list of bonus words. You can continue searching for bonus words even after finding all the main words (after winning).
    • Also, in each puzzle, there is one “Word of the Day”. It’s an interesting and long word from among the bonus ones, for guessing which you will receive two additional hints.
    • A new Squares puzzle is released daily at midnight.

    Squares Strategy

    • You can rotate the playing field left and right using the buttons located in the bottom right corner. Try looking at the puzzle from different angles; it may bring you closer to victory.
    • After you find 40% of the words in the game, you will receive an additional hint – a number in the corner of each letter. This number indicates how many words are left that begin with that letter. If there is no number, it means there are no more words that start with that letter. If a letter changes its color to orange, it means that this letter is no longer used in the main words. However, it can still be used in bonus words.
    • In each game, you will have from 3 to 5 hints (a lightbulb button under the playing field). When you press this button, you will see the first letter of a random word, as well as the first direction to move in to guess it. You receive from 3 to 5 hints depending on the puzzle’s difficulty. Also, you can get 1 additional hint if you share the game link with friends (the button to the right of the hints button).
    • Squares does seem to include a number of fairly uncommon words even in the main list. This can lead to quite lengthy, head-scratching games!

  • Combinations

Combinations is a grid-based word game in which players must form valid English words from two, three or four letter tiles.

It can be thought of a little like Boggle, but with multiple letters per cell.

Played on a 4×4 grid, each cell contains a two or three letter ‘fragment’ which should be combined into words.

For example, in the screenshot above, cell 1 contains “st” and cell 2 contains “ing”. These can be combined to create the word “sting”.

    Combinations Rules

Create words using combinations of letters from the grid and try to get the maximum score.

    • Words can consist of two, three or four combinations.
    • Each combination can only be used once per word.
    • The number in the upper right corner of the tile indicates how many times this combination appears in today’s puzzle.
    • Words with hyphens, proper nouns, vulgarities, and especially rare words are not included in the word list.

    Combinations Strategy

    • Although rather mechanical, words formed from two cells can be “brute force” solved by simply tapping the first cell followed by the second, then the first cell followed by the third, and so on, the beginning with the second cell. This strategy is not recommended for three and four combos.
    • When all standard words using a cell have been found, it is replaced with a check mark. That cell can no longer be used, even for bonus words which may use it.

  • Blossom

    Blossom History

Blossom is a relatively new online word game, created and hosted by Merriam-Webster.

It draws inspiration from classic word games such as Scrabble and Boggle, focusing on expanding players’ vocabulary and word-building skills.

The game’s origins can be traced back to a small group of linguists and educators who aimed to create an engaging way to enhance vocabulary and spelling abilities. Since its inception, Blossom has grown in popularity, especially in educational settings, where it is used as a learning tool.

The game is so named because the seven letters are arranged in a flower pattern, with one central letter and six letter petals surrounding it.

    Blossom Rules

    Objective

The aim of the game is to create as many words as possible using the seven letters provided. There are twelve ‘rounds’, meaning a player has to find a dozen words.

    Setup

Players are provided with a central letter and a ring of six additional letters surrounding it. All words must include the central letter.

    Word Length

Each word must have at least four letters. There is no upper limit to the number of letters a word can have. Once a word is found it cannot be resubmitted.

    Acceptable Words

Words must be valid and found in the standard dictionary used by the game. Proper nouns and abbreviations are typically not allowed.

    Scoring

Points are awarded based on the length and rarity of the word. Longer and less common words score higher. On each round, a petal is highlighted. Using this letter one or more times in the submitted word for that round gives bonus points. Each petal letter is highlighted twice per game.

    Game End

The game concludes when players cannot form any more valid words using the given letters.

    Blossom Strategy

    Start with the Basics

Begin by listing out all possible words you can think of using the central letter. This can help you quickly rack up points.

    Look for Prefixes and Suffixes

Use common prefixes and suffixes to extend the length of your words.

    Use the Central Letter Strategically

Remember, every word must include the central letter, so focus on how it can be combined with the other letters.

    Use the highlighted letter

An additional bonus is given each time the highlighted letter is used in the word submitted on that particular turn. Each petal letter becomes the bonus letter twice per game.

    Spot Anagrams

Look for anagrams in the available letters to discover new word combinations.

    Practice Vocabulary Building

Regularly playing Blossom and similar word games can enhance your vocabulary, making it easier to spot potential words in future games.

    Challenge Yourself with Longer Words

While short words can add up to a good score, it’s the longer and unique words that will give you an edge over your competitors.

Score over 300 points to become a Blossom Boss. Score over 350 points to become a Mega Boss.

    Conclusion

By mastering the rules and strategies of Blossom, players can improve their word-building skills and enjoy a satisfying mental challenge.

    Wordle Overview

Wordle is an online word game where players have six attempts to guess a five-letter word.

Each guess provides feedback about letter positions and whether the letters are in the solution or not.

It gained immense popularity for its simple yet challenging nature, and players often share their results and strategies on social media platforms.

    Wordle History

Wordle was created by software engineer Josh Wardle, initially as a private game for himself and his partner.

It was released to the public in October 2021 and quickly became a viral sensation due to its addictive gameplay and the ability to share progress visually.

The game’s minimalistic design and daily puzzle format contribute to its widespread appeal.

The New York Times Company bought the rights to the game for an undisclosed 7-figure sum in February 2022. Wordle is now available to play for free on the New York Times’ games section.

Wordle has spawned many variations and clones.

    Rules of Wordle

    Guess the Word

Players have six attempts to guess the secret five-letter word.

    Feedback

After each guess, letters are highlighted in different colours:

    • Green: The letter is in the correct position.
    • Yellow: The letter is in the word but in the wrong position.
    • Grey: The letter is not in the word at all.

Words with duplicated letters are allowed.

Simple plurals are valid word guesses but will never be a solution.

If a player guesses a word containing just one letter which is repeated in the solution word, Wordle will not show that letter as being repeated.

However, if a player guesses a word with a repeated letter, but the solution word only has one of that letter, Wordle will highlight just one of the letters in the appropriate colour.

    Easy and Hard Mode

    Wordle has two play modes.

In ‘easy’ mode, a player may input any valid word on any guess in order to ascertain the solution.

In ‘hard’ mode, a player must reuse any green ‘in place’ or yellow ‘wrong place’ letters on subsequent guesses.

    Daily Puzzle

A new word is available each day, and all players guess the same word.

    Wordle Strategies

    Start with Common Vowels

Begin with words that have common vowels (e.g., “audio”, “arise”) to identify potential vowel positions.

    Use Common Consonants

After identifying vowels, use guesses with common consonants (e.g., “stare”, “crane”) to narrow down possibilities.

    Process of Elimination

Use the feedback to eliminate letters and possible word options systematically.

    Mix Vowels and Consonants

Combine known vowels and consonants in different configurations to uncover the correct word.

    Be Observant

Pay attention to letter positions that are revealed and adjust subsequent guesses accordingly.

    Avoid Repeating Used Letters

Once a letter has been confirmed not to be in the word, avoid using it in future guesses to save valuable attempts.

    No Repeat Solutions

At present, no word has been a solution more than once. Therefore, having some knowledge of previous solutions will avoid you trying that word, unless it is useful in gaining more clues.

    Conclusion

Wordle’s simplicity and the requirement for logical deduction make it an engaging daily challenge for word enthusiasts and casual gamers alike.
